Sinulog is the dance ritual in honor of the miraculous image Sto. Nino. The dance moves to the sound of the drums and this resembles the current of what was known as Cebu's Pahina River. Thus, in Cebuano, they say it's, Sinulog.
More than just the meaning of the word is significance of the dance. Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan came to Cebu on April 7 1521, to plant the cross on its sea shore and claim the country for the king of the Spain. Sinulog was already danced by the natives in donor or their wooden idols and Anitos. Then Magellan came and introduce Christianity. He gave Sto. Nino (image of the child Jesus Christ) gift to Hara Amihan wife of Cebu's Rajah Humabon who was later name Queen Juana.

This time however, they dance it no longer to worship their Native Idols but a sign of reverence to Sto. Nino which is now enshrined at San Agustin Church (Basilica Minore Del Sto. Nino). Thousands of pilgrims and devoted of Sto. Nino walked on the streets going to Basilica bringing their candles and rosary. After the procession a high mass is going to be celebrated. Many people believe that their hopes in life are answered by dancing the Sinulog after the solemn procession.
